Career Quest

Transforming career exploration into an interactive semester journey.

An interactive experience where students explore careers through choice, play, and evolving identity.

Raven

  • Age: 19

  • Occupation: First-year student

  • Location: Miami

User Persona

Raven has always been her mama’s sweetest girl. She cares deeply about her family, works hard in school, and takes her future seriously. Her mama trusts that she’ll find the path that feels right for her.

For a long time, Raven has dreamed of becoming a teacher. But after taking her first few education courses, she begins to realize that teaching is more challenging—and requires a different set of skills—than she had imagined.

She isn’t ready to give up on her dream. Instead, she starts wondering:

“Is teaching really the best path for me? What else could I be good at?”

Her older brother, Kiwi, makes that question feel even harder. Kiwi is talented and does well academically, but after switching between three very different majors, his college journey takes longer than expected.

Through his experience, Raven sees how difficult it can be to find a path that truly feels right.

She wants to understand herself earlier—her strengths, interests, and values—so she can make more informed choices about her future.

Design Challenge

Many students don't actively explore different career paths. Instead, they often follow what their family, friends, or surroundings expect from them.

This happens because:

  • Many students, especially freshmen, don't know where to start.

  • Many students have interests in different fields but don't know how to connect them.

  • Traditional advising is boring and abstract.

Solution

A narrative-driven interactive game in which students “play” their future paths.

Step 3 — Experience and learn

Choose courses, complete challenges, and gain real skills as your interests evolve through exploration and play.

Why courses + skills + mini games?

  • Simulates real school experiences while making career exploration more engaging and hands-on.

Collect stamps from different interests before choosing a career path.

Why Stamps?

  • Stamps feel familiar to students and shift the focus from choosing a future to exploring interests.

Step 4 — Connect the dots

Shows how different interests connect, so students can explore broadly first and narrow down later.

Step 1 — Know yourself

Step 5 — Make informed decisions

Receive personalized recommendations for majors, degree programs, and careers that align with your unique journey at the UM.

Start by selecting an MBTI animal companion that reflects how you naturally think, learn, and make decisions.

Why MBTI? Why Animals?

  • Many young adults already use MBTI to understand themselves, making it a familiar starting point.

  • Animals avoid gender stereotypes while making personality exploration more fun and engaging.

Step 2 — Explore interests

Design Vision

Visual Concept

Your career is not a fixed destination, but an evolving exploration of possibilities.

This project reimagines career discovery as an interactive experience, where users actively explore different paths instead of passively selecting predefined options.

We developed a tarot-inspired visual system to represent career exploration as a symbolic and interpretive journey.

Character Design

Characters are designed as flexible archetypes that reflect different career paths, interests, and personality traits.

To avoid limiting how users see themselves, all characters are presented with a neutral gender expression, allowing anyone to relate to them.

Each character is represented by animals inspired by MBTI types, making abstract traits more engaging.
