Art For the People

What did I replace?

The first modification I did was redesigning the metal pattern and replace the conductive tape with a copper foil sheet. In the last version, I used conductive copper tape which was not stable, and hard to stick them perfectly on the acrylic board.

By switching to the copper foil sheet, I found it is a lot easier to handle and allow me to be more creative with the decoration. To improve the blank acrylic background, I decided to adopt the Art Deco style to fit the copper material. Lastly, I welded the wire to the copper foil sheets so that it is more stable.

What did I add?

The new function allows users to receive direct feedback from their interaction with the Chinese characters on the board. The immediate response to users’ action is implemented because the overall focus of the device is educational. By bluntly showing users the two meaningly equal phrases, the device prompts users to think about their impression of the Chinese characters or the connection between Chinese and English cultures. In company of the light, the text input shown on the monitor screen allows users to understand precisely how each Chinese character corresponds with the English word.

Code(Final)

What was I supposed to do but I didn't?

One of the features I originally planned to keep is an external button to switch between device modes, but I used all the circuit python board interfaces and there was no way to attach another button to the board. After discussing it with friends and professors, I found each Chinese character on the acrylic board is a button by itself. Therefore, I removed the external button and adopted each successful completion of a Chinese character puzzle as a triggering event for the fourth mode. Following the educational purpose of the device, I programmed that, by completing a character puzzle, it will type the meaning of the Chinese character on the input field to emphasize the connection across languages.
